FAQs

You’ve got burning questions? I’ll extinguish any doubts or fears (sorry, I’ll stop now). Here’s some of the more common questions and answers. If you’ve got another question, leave a comment below and I’ll try to find the answer for you.

Are there any specific requirements for participants to be aware?

Yes, participants must be medically fit to take part and not under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Additionally, specific age and licensing requirements apply, so it’s essential to review these before booking.

What are the age and licensing requirements for participants?

Participants aged 17+ need to hold a full British or international manual driving licence, and this will need to be presented on the day. Some providers require a minimum age of 18+, and some will allow those holding a full UK automatic licence, so, if in doubt, check before you book.

Where children aged 10 years old or above are permitted to drive, they need to be accompanied by a parent or guardian aged 18+. Don’t worry, these particular experiences take place on private land with trained instructors.

Are there any restrictions based on weight and height for participants?

For operational and health and safety reasons, the maximum weight of participants is usually 18-20 stone (114-127kg).

The minimum height required (to safely reach the pedals) is usually 4ft 10″ (1.5m), with a maximum of 6ft 4″ (1.9m) normally stipulated.

What language are the instructions and directions provided in?

Instructions and directions are provided in English to ensure clear communication and a smooth experience for all participants. As such, for safety, it’s imperative that you understand English commands.

Can I bring my dog to the experience?

As much as Fido might like chasing fire engines, no dogs are permitted at these locations. Human spectators are normally permitted, though. Some venues charge a small supplement to spectate.

What happens if there is extreme weather on the day of my booking?

While driving is an all-weather activity, in the case of extreme weather conditions, activities may need to be rescheduled at short notice. The safety and comfort of our participants are of utmost importance to the operators, so they won’t place you at any unnecessary risk.

What is the availability of the experiences throughout the year?

Experiences usually take place on limited weekdays and weekends between March and October. It’s advisable to book your slot in advance to secure your preferred date.

Will I be driving a real fire engine?

Yes! These are former fire engines that were used across Britain for many years, attending all sorts of emergencies. While they might have reached their operational peak and have been retired from frontline duties, a few of them have been preserved so that you can experience the thrill of driving a real fire engine. Not a mockup; not a fake; it’s the real deal.

Each experience has its own set of rules and requirements, so be sure to check with the retailer before you purchase an activity voucher.

This Fire Engine Driving Experience is 100% For You if…

  1. You’ve Always Secretly Wanted to Be Fireman Sam: Finally, your chance to live out those childhood dreams without having to wear the whole uniform (although no judgment if you want to bring your own helmet).
  2. You’re an Enthusiastic Supporter of Fire Station Open Days: You’ve cheered on every display, marvelled at the equipment, and now it’s time to step into the driver’s seat and experience how it’s really done.
  3. You Believe Sirens Make Everything More Exciting: Traffic? No problem! With your newfound siren power, you’ll have everyone clearing the way, even if it’s just to the supermarket (in your imagination, at least!).
  4. You Crave the Ultimate Adrenaline Rush: Roller coasters are old news. It’s time to swap G-forces for fire engine forces and feel the roar of that engine under your command.
  5. You’ve Always Wanted to Impress Your Inner Child: Forget boring adult stuff! This experience is your ticket to impressing your 8-year-old self who always thought firefighters were the coolest people on the planet.
  6. You’d Love to Find Out What it’s Like to Drive for the Fire Services: Perhaps this unique and quirky experience is the opportunity you’ve been looking for to kickstart a career (or change) to become a fully qualified firefighter?

Avoid This Experience if…

  1. You’re Terrified of Pushing Buttons: Sirens, lights, and flashing gadgets? Nope, you’re more of a peaceful Sunday drive kind of person. No need to bring that stress into your life.
  2. You Believe Driving Should Be a Zen Experience: Honk if you’re calm! If road rage is already a little too real, perhaps commanding a roaring fire engine might not be the best idea.
  3. You’re Too Cool for Sirens: Why disturb the peace when you can cruise in silence? If you prefer blending in rather than standing out, this might not be the flashy adventure for you.
